The sound levels on the debut Cd from Hobart's Midnight Caller are frankly mercurial. If amplifiers could go to 11, these ones would go to 12 and massage your viscera similtaneously, Patrick Cross exhibits a knack for the raw, lazy power chord patented by Sebadoh. He sings like a DC punk on the wrong edge of straight. His brother Dan plays bass and he is a rhythm king (check out his work in their other outfit Rentboy). Fast or mellow, it's heavy stuff and rightly dope. Two others work at the shop and they are Reggie, on second guitar, and Stu, their maniacal drummer. The digital 8-track recording produces a clean, mean crunch. Woozy noise melodies yield to meaty, whiplash metal riffs. 'Thunderstick' and 'Field of Battle' are two numbers representative of their titles. Air guitar orgasm 'Repeater' is the feel good, bong hit of the winter - so nice you play it twice.
